Hello. I’m Sam, and I’d like everyone to be able to understand and act on social issues.
I am a senior research fellow at the Institute for Social Policy, Housing and Equalities Research (I-SPHERE) at Heriot-Watt University. I lead work with the Scottish Government and the Hunter Foundation focusing on responses to poverty and disadvantage across Scotland.
Previously I managed a portfolio of grant-making programmes at the Health Foundation, an independent charitable funder supporting improvements in health and healthcare across the UK. Before that, I led policy work for the Making Every Adult Matter coalition, which brings together the national charities Clinks, Mind, and Homeless Link to address multiple needs.
I have expertise in the links between social problems around homelessness, substance misuse and mental ill health. I’m particularly passionate about making sure that people with lived experience of these issues are involved in decisions that affect their lives.
